Dr. Maria Cheung is a associate professor at the Faculty of Social Work at the University of Manitoba. She is also a vocal and tireless advocate for the rights of Falun Gong practitioners in China. Dr. Cheung specializes in human rights in China and her research areas include the forced organ harvesting of Falun Gong practitioners in China and discrimination of the Falun Gong practitioners in major diaspora Chinese communities in Canada. Dr. Cheung published a scholarly article called, "Cold Genocide: Falun Gong in China." The article seeks to validate that the persecution against Falun Gong needs to be categorized as a cold genocide, and suggests that the subtle yet equally destructive genocide needs to be more represented in genocide studies today.
